Answering Ypsilanti’s Questions About Memory Care

If you don’t see your question below, browse our FAQs page or contact us today for more information!

Memory care is a specialized type of long-term care designed for individuals with memory-related conditions, most commonly Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The primary goal of memory care is to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals who have cognitive impairments, often in the later stages of their conditions, where they require a higher level of assistance and supervision.

Memory care is the appropriate choice for those with dementia-related conditions who require specialized, long-term care and support. Nursing homes are better suited for individuals with a broader range of short-term medical needs and physical disabilities.

The main goal of memory care is to enhance a person’s quality of life and well-being. Nursing homes are primarily focused on providing medical and clinical services and serve those with complex medical needs, physical disabilities, and those in need of rehabilitation after surgery or illness.

Michigan’s Medicaid program does not directly cover memory care. However, there is a Medicaid waiver program called the MI Choice Waiver that can be used to pay for memory care services in an assisted living facility (this does not include room and board).
